In Cosmos we recognise the following levels of mental development:

  • Philomath: a person undertaking or who has achieved philomathy;
  • Polymath: a person undertaking or who has achieved polymathy;
  • Philotechnist: a person undertaking or who has achieved philotechny;
  • Polytechnist: a person undertaking or who has achieved polytechny;
  • Philoscopist: a person undertaking or who has achieved philoscopy;
  • Polyscopist: a person undertaking or who has achieved polyscopy;
  • Philosopher: a person undertaking or who has achieved philosophy;
  • Polysopher: a person undertaking or who has achieved polysophy.

These levels correspond to these levels in the world outside Cosmos:

  • Philomath is a learner who reads books, a pupil, a student, a scientist who knows their stuff;
  • Polymath is a learner who is knowledgeable in many fields;
  • Philotechnist is a practitioner, a professional, a worker who is able to turn knowledge into practice;
  • Polytechnist is a practitioner competent in many fields of practice;
  • Philoscopist is a researcher, a person who is able to find answers based on empirical research, observation, analysis, or other techniques;
  • Polyscopist is a researcher able to do research in many fields;
  • Philosopher is a thinker, a person who is able to use their knowledge, their practice, and their research for developing some complete theories of their fields;
  • Polysopher is a thinker able to integrate many fields and therefore develop complete theories spanning many or all academic fields.

Philomath comes from philo = friend and mathema = lesson or mathesis = to learn.

The word philoscopist and philoscopy comes from Ancient Greek philo meaning friend and scopy meaning "to have an objective, examine it, and look into it" which comes from the Ancient Greek skopein. The word philoscopist and philoscopy was coined by Anonymous on 21 January 2008 at 00:05 UTC+02 in personal communication with User:NSK.

Philotechnist and philotechny is a usual Ancient Greek word. Techne means art, including the sense of a practice or profession.

Philosopher and philosophy comes from philo = friend and sophia = wisdom.

Polymath is a usual word.

The words polysopher and polyscopist were coined by User:NSK on 28 January 2008 at 04:52 UTC+02.
